ANZAC DAY-Public holiday

It’s a day to commemorate the brave souls from Aust and NZ who went to fought a war in Gallipoli during WWI. Remember the street infront of my place where all the shops are is called ANZAC PARADE. I guess is the stretch street where the ANZAC soldiers used to parade along when they returned. For more historical background story pls go to Wikipedia.

Since I’m in geriatrics term now…I should say I guess it’s a GREAT DAY FOR the senior citizens…as it’s their generation big happening event….some old folks aka old Anzacs will come out to parade if they are not too illed. The various cities have their parade and celebrations too. The old folks homes probably have their old folks out on the day. It 'll b another rest day for me.

“ ANZAC Day - 25 April - marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. The soldiers in those forces quickly became known as Anzacs, and the pride they soon took in that name endures to this day.

When war broke out in 1914 Australia had been a federal commonwealth for only thirteen years. The new national government was eager to establish its reputation among the nations of the world. In 1915 Australian and New Zealand soldiers formed part of the Allied expedition that set out to capture the Gallipoli peninsula to open the way to the Black Sea for the Allied navies. The plan was to capture Istanbul, capital of the Ottoman Empire and an ally of Germany. They landed at Gallipoli on 25 April, meeting fierce resistance from the Turkish defenders. What had been planned as a bold strike to knock Turkey out of the war quickly became a stalemate, and the campaign dragged on for eight months. At the end of 1915 the allied forces were evacuated after both sides had suffered heavy casualties and endured great hardships. Over 8,000 Australian soldiers were killed. News of the landing at Gallipoli made a profound impact on Australians at home and 25 April quickly became the day on which Australians remembered the sacrifice of those who had died in war. Though the Gallipoli campaign failed in its military objectives of capturing Constantinople and knocking Turkey out of the war, the Australian and New Zealand troops' actions during the campaign bequeathed an intangible but powerful legacy. The creation of what became known as an "Anzac legend" became an important part of the national identity of both nations. This shaped the ways they viewed both their past and their future.”

ANYONE CAN TELL me what can I do in the train of 2 HOURS JOURNEY to and fro? I am only used to sleeping in public transport….. -_-

1st Health Support Battalion
Holsworthy Barracks
HOLSWORTHY

“Holsworthy Barracks is located in the outer south-western Sydney suburb of Holsworthy. It is part of the Holsworthy military reserve, which has been a training area and artillery range for the Australian Army since World War I. Following World War II it became a major base for the permanent component of the Australian Army in New South Wales. Following the movement of many units of the Regular Army to Darwin in the late 1990s many Army Reserve units were moved from other depots to Holsworthy Barracks, including the Headquarters of the 5th Brigade.

Holsworthy Barracks is the current home to 17 Signals Regiment, 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR), 4th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (4RAR) and the 171st Aviation Squadron.”

This is the place where I will be posted to for 2months and 3 days each week 9am-5pm. I GUESS the thing that keeps me motivated will be MACHO ARMY GUYS.:P ( at least I thought so)

UNSW NEUTRALISE

I have gotten this email about goin to Blue Mountains to help plant trees over the weekend. At the same time camp and have fun over there and it all costs only $10. It’s organized by UNSW landcare of biological environmental department. I have always wanted to visit to those tourist attractions but it always costs some money. I SS(international student society) always have trips to these place but it will cost at least 65 bucks. Therefore this project is the ultimate opportunity for me to have fun yet save money. I have signed up for it and is quite excited about it. We’ll be camping so I need to get sleeping bag somewhere somehow. It’ll be on the last weekend of my geriatrics term. So I guess I have to prepare my assignment in advance. ^_^

Geriatrics Term

I am at the 2nd half of my A&E course – GERIATRICS. Used to think geriatrics is juz about old folk’s home….but now I know is so multidisciplinary….. it’s not easy to be a GERIATRICIANS. Our population is AGING too so I guess it will be a hot specialty if not now but soon. U muz know all systems as their all systems may be failing (CVS, REspi, Vision, Hearing, Bones.etc)…u muz know oncology…as u know they may have cancer..u muz deal with psycho problem as u know they may be demented or depressed…you have to know the management to the multi ailment and yet to avoid complications of polypharmacy. u muz know the community care as that is a great part of their life….you have to do community or home visit too.

Difference between hostel and nursing home

Hostel is for old folks who juz need supervision but can care for themselves basically. They have risk of fall and other illness but haven disturbed their ability to eat and pee.

Nursing Home is for those who need ur care to eat and pee.

This term we are supposed to hand in a nursing home/home visit report.

Of course we r req to visit the home or nursing which at this pt of time I have yet to arranged.

FALL RISK ASSESSMENT

They develop all sorts of funny yet practical tests to determine ur risk of fall (especially for elderly)… That’s what we learnt when we visited the POW medical research institute and gait lab. They even have cameras and force detection on the floor to determine ur direction of force when walking, stance phase and swing phase.etc. They have obstacles course to determine ur risk taking behaviours (eg. automated fake paper car) . It was an interesting day.

ROBOT PROSTECTOMY

Watched a radical prostectomy video during one of the tutorials…. They used ROBOT ARMS with caliper and “scissors” at one end to do it..or rather HE (dr. Phillip something) used robot arms to do it and he did 1500 of PROSTECTOMY using the robot arm d. Apparently he is very proud of his statistic I think. Haha…but he’s really good. The surgery that people usually finish in 4-5 hrs, he did it in JUST 1 HOUR. He can do up to 4-5 such surgeries each day. I guess in 20 yrs down ROBOT SURGERY will be the IN THING. It offers high precision, and hi visibility(magnified view), less bleeding and complications.etc

WAR MEMORIAL HOSPITAL

Just went to WMH in our tutor’s car….it’s such a peaceful place somewhere near bondi junction, . U don’t expect much pple there as it’s a rehab hospital …Juz “crash” our new tutor (dr nick brannen) clinic. He saw 2 demented pt that afternoon. It’s interesting and an eye opener…

FIRST CASE:

the lady was telling everything so convincingly…she so alert and healthy….yet she’s demented(Alzheimer). At the end of the day, the 2 sons came and burst all the bubbles that she had been telling us….

2nd CASE

At ex doctor who has Lewy body Dementia….yet he’s fully aware of his illness (unlike the first case) it’s like parkinsonism but it has component of dementia in it….complicated.

RAINY DAYS 22nd -24th April & still goin on.....

It keeps raining and raining and I don’t know when will it stop….fr small drizzle and downpour….sometimes I wonder why do they need so much rainfall during such a short period.

The weather is turning cold too…I’m wet everyday, umbrella not enuf to cover me. The wind has destroyed 2 of my umbrella spines.*grrrr* I need a new umbrella!!! preferably made of titanium/alloy. Today I dried my jacket fr yesterday wetness juz in time for today’s wetness again. Thongs is juz right for the weather. my long pants is always wet near the foot. That day I went to swim after class….tot the rain will stop after I finish and perfect for me to get home. But who knows…..after I finish…..it’s raining heavier….bopian….so my towel shall be my make shift lion dance like umbrella for the moment after I waited for 15 min for any kind soul to share an umbrella with me (who never appears…)

juz a random note, RAIN had his concert in sydney during the Easter Break.(i think sydney has lotsa KOREANS...for once i was mistaken to be KOREAN too) My fren saw RAIN eating near the OPERA house admist the unknowing angmohs...."he pointed to his family : isn't that RAIN? "the bodyguards heard and all bcome KANCHONG and stood up. protecting RAIN fr the innocent family who were just trying to take a shot of the SUPERSTAR. the mere thought of the scene is so hilarious and funny. LOL

Finally I SWAM

I can’t stand it anymore so finally I book myself into the uni sports center pool. I bought a 20 visits pass at 56 bucks. It’s like 2.80 per visit instead of the 4 bucks single visit. I could say that it’s totally worth the money.

First, I don’t tired out so fast in the pool…thus longer exercise time….

2nd from past experience, I burn more calories fr swimming,

3rd I don’t subject myself to restrictions due to weather changes and early nightfall

4th I will not get painful jt and mus that easily as compared to jogging.

5th the water is warm and nice and it comes with SAUNA facilities….oh my, I feel that my skin is suppler now (psycho effect only)

The only downside is …..i’ll have big arms…. L but it’s really funny sometimes to see little kids swim better and faster than me….i even saw a lil gal swimming butterfly…OMG, paiseh…..

Caffeine

COFFEE + COKE (how weird is that?!)

I know I’m bad but I tend to fall asleep in tutorials/lectures …. partly bcuz i don't haf enuf sleep, Partly bcuz I haven succumbed to the SEDUCTION of CAFFEINE yet. It’s not like it’s ultra tasty so it’s ok that I don’t like it. Somehow I have this mindset that using something chemical to curb ur sleep is juz not right. YOU ARE TIRED MEANS YOU ARE TIRED. At least now I’m still holding my head high infront of the one of the most fav beverages in the world. But no promise yet…..

World Tower

It’s so tall they call it world tower (juz joking) it’s where the rich people stay as john used to tell us. But can’t believe we walk into it one fine day. After I bumped into Imel and her cousin when I’m doin my AIDS trust fundraising. The view is simply superb (bird's view of the city). U feel so high up, it’s a one room apartment (the one that the cousin is staying), u see the city, anzac bridge. it’s in the heart of city…..and it all comes at a great cost 400++ for one week.

Just a queer observation, i juz reallise that the backview of the cousin look like me when i still had wavy hair and presumably i'll wear guy's clothes ;P

AIDS Trust Fundraising

It’s the one week Easter break, after much shopping, I reallise that it’s time for me to earn some bucks…so the only available job is be a fundraiser after Jac’s intro. It’s like flag day, holding bucket on the Sydney city street asking for money fr pedestrians. Except that I get 33% commission of what i collected. So first day I collected 120+ and thus I earn 41 in 3 hrs at Hyde Park South.2nd day I collected 100+ and thus I earn 36 in 4 hrs along Liverpool St. In total i earn77 dollars in 7 hrs.

It’s definitely not an easy job I can say (it’s sorta underpaid but at least I get something and be part of charity as well) U see all sorts of people. Most of the time, the people that you don’t expect them to donate (judging fr their look) actually donated….(or course I approached them most of the time) it’s a truly randomize process. But I ‘m dead sure those in full suit are not gonna donate. They probably see pple like us everyday on work days. U get lotsa diff responses like “ sorry no change, sorry no money, sorry another day” of course some people will juz give u cold shoulder. Asian gals will give u a shy smile juz like wat I’ll do too….of course I did get some bad remarks like “ you are here everyday” (you refer to the fundraiser), “ I don’t advocates such blah blah” ( I can’t get wat she’s saying but she’s definitely not frenly). It’s kinda surprising that coins lidat can accumulated to such a lump sum. Juz an incident worth to mention, there is this old man keep digging in his groceries bag, so I tot he’s gonna donate but who knows he took out a banana and put it in the bucket. Of course that’s for me and the bucket can’t fit that. So SWEET. i so need that

I guess when people saw it’s for AIDS….u know….all the stigma still present in some mindset, they don’t donate.

Sometimes when some guys saw me, I saw them reaching into their pocket and u heard the clutter of syilling loose change….but they don’t donate. I guess the sight of me reminded them how broke are they……

I oso saw the Falungong demonstration which caught everyone’s attention on the busy street and no one actually care to donate money unless I explain to them what are the Chinese characters about. Everyone juz stopped and see…. The march was very long, consisted of brass band, loud speakers with recorded slogan, people holding banners, dead man’s photos, people dress up as police, doctors, captives.etc They even put torture simulation scene on the back of truck, saying falungong captives are tortured and their organs illegally taken out in China. True or not, I really have no idea. But I know it did catch lotsa attention. Could have taken a photo with my new phone camera but I decided that my blog shall stay away fr any political interest. Around 1 month ago, I also saw some pro Tibetan demonstration against China….I guess that’s the wonder in Western Countries – Freedom of Speech. You most probably wldn’t see this in Asia.

Neball at Sydney Intervarsity Malaysian Sports Tournament

After 3 trainings altogether (in Moore Park-the nicest park with FREE BBALL,NETBALL AND TENNIS COURTS), we went to the Sydney Aquatic Center juz beside Sydney Uni on one sunday. Oh my, the gym, swimming pool is so much nicer than UNSW. The treadmill has plasma screen Infront, not one but many, showing diff channels. Swimming pool is full 50 m not divided into two 25 M. UniSdy is definitely more scenic and classic but I do prefer UNSW juz like how I like IMU campus. I like it small & compact so that I don’t need to walk kilometers fr one place to another. we won the game with the help of the 2 rather cute twins (guy). Yep, it’s a mixed game and only 1 guy is allowed each time. So they are always center. The twins intercepted numerous balls thanks to the great elastic strength of their ankles and knees and fast reaction time. Of course we have a couple of star players in the game too…yep we won the game…so as tennis, basketball.etc against 3 other uni in Sydney (University Technology of Sydney, Macquarie uni , Unisydney). So supposedly we are entitled to go Melbourne to challenge the rest….but….i think still have to consider according to budget.

Emma's Here

Easter Break marked the end of Oncology term. How I wish I have 1 more month or more in oncology cuz I don’t think I’ve learnt enuf.

Emma came to Sydney, went around shopping at BONDI JUNCTION & PADDINGTON. Bought winter clothing 1 at 60 bucks fr TARGET. 1 at 130 bucks fr BARDOT. Promised myself that one day when I get my own PAY….i’m so gonna reward myself with a pair of the chic SKETCHERS SNEAKERS. (Emma bought a pair of sketchers and sunglasses and other bajus). For now, I shld make do with my synthetic leather(plastic) doll shoe which I don’t really like to wear cuz it hurts my feet….sorta regretted….cld have spent 30 bucks more to buy a real leather one. Went to eat at DIMSUN restaurant at bondi junction, it’s yummy especially the mango pudding. It’s so ironic again….i nv get to each such stuff back in MSIA…..and now I eat it in MORE EX WESTERN COUNTRY…..i guess my life is full of ironies… I hope that Emma has enjoyed herself here though the bed can be a lil small but hope u don't mind. thanks for the Cadbury Roses. ;D

LORD MAYOR WELCOME OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

We went to the lord mayor welcome night (27 march), at Sydney town hall after our hospital day. The mayor of Sydney is city is a LADY. Heard that it is the 2nd time this is organized. How lucky am I to catch this kind of great event again. The night consisted of speech by the mayor, some hi rank people, the student rep fr each uni, aboriginal dance, small orchestra band. And plenty of decent finger food and drinks. It’s basically for socializing again, as u know I don’t socialize well in such a big setting…so I have decided just to be there to settle my dinner fr the finger food, enjoy the architecture of the building and the music. How often do u get to visit Sydney Town Hall btw :D

A CAMERA AS SMALL AS A PILL

And it’s as clear as lets say 5MegaPix.(juz agaration) It’s a video cam. it’s wireless, and it can be swallowed, it costs 1000 bucks, it goes into ur small intestine where scopes can’t go. It can be passed out. The procedure is easy. This is the magic of technology- tradename PillCam

This is introduced to us in one of the tutorials. I have even gotten one of the dummy back home juz for fun.

PREVIOUS PATIENTS

So sorry for not updating. Basically I have plenty of chances to update…but I’m a ambitious woman so I plan to do a LONG ENTRY ALL IN ONE GOAL :P

It’s sorta outdated…but to continue from my previous entry….my patient did get back to me thru emails. THANK GOSH. I have chatted with him in the ward again when he came back for radiotherapy….Thanks to him, I managed to complete my 1ST assignment in UNSW successfully.

He is cooperative, patient and a very nice person. He even read thru my report and corrected my grammar and spelling mistakes. I bought bag full of fruits for him and get him newspapers when he’s in the ward. I’m still keeping in touch with him thru emails now.

As for the artist guy….they still can’t find the cause of his wt loss….at once they found out tt he has increased lymphocytes. This is what I heard fr Prof S.Miliken: The enterologist then referred him to hematologist. Hematologist found out that his CEA 19-9 is elevated. That’s so ironic…hematologist get a finding that enterologist is supposed to discover…. Therefore he is back to gastro department again…schedule for another gastroscopy( or mayb ERCP). The findings of gastroscopy last time is normal. I was there witnessing it…. He was quite surprised to see me there though….i told him I’m goin…but he didn’t expect me to be so productive to find my way there in the scope room. :D I saw him last week, he’s still up and jumping and he said that the doc didn’t manage to find anything. He said he sent an email thanking me for my fruits……STRANGE I didn’t receive it….he seems quite disappointed that I didn’t reply him. He’s referred to dietician now.

NANA 2

I SO WANNA WATCH THIS...but that means i have to download for a long time like last time for NANA 1. i can't seem to find it too..... HOW?!!!!

NANA 2

Below is the trailer for NANA 1

for those who are still in a nutshell...this is a story about these 2 girl with the same name and their lives intertwined, their friendship, their relationship.etc
It is a anime turned movie. I like Mika Voice, she doesn't have the usual squeeky voice of Jpop singer. I like Yuna Ito voice too...but can't seem to find the song by her to dl.

some comment:
Hachi for NANA 1 is prettier and cuter (just like the way Hachi is meant to be). Hachi for NANA 2 took a more natural focus, more mature in expressing, though not as pretty.

MIka is always as cool as ever.

I prefer Ren in NANA 1. (mika's bf)
I prefer Shin (white hair guy) in NANA 1 too. though some may say Shin in NANA 2 is cute....but he is only 15...abit too young for the character. (can't u see he's so thin)
